Gardening enthusiasts ‘could improve outdoor smoking areas’

30th July 2010

Those who enjoy getting the gardening tools out could make outdoor smoking areas at their workplace far more pleasant with a large planter, one commentator has said.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Helen Yemm suggested that a livestock drinking trough was a relatively cheap, easily maintained and “surprisingly good-looking” idea for a container.

If gardening enthusiasts are unable to find one of these, the expert noted that planters should be around 6.5 ft long with a depth of at least 20 inches.

As for what to cultivate in the pot, she advised that flowering evergreen species that are tough and have “interesting leaves” are a good low-maintenance option.

Pittosporum Irene Paterson was one of her recommendations alongside H. argutifolius Silver Lace and Broughton Beauty.

Recently, industrial design student Natalie Kind spoke to the Guardian about a glowing container she had invented to help partially-sighted people continue to take advantage of their garden products.
