Gardening enthusiasts may be interested to look at alternatives to lawns such as decking, as one expert has recently warned that maintaining them can damage the environment.
Writing for the Observer, Dan Pearson revealed that 54 million Americans tend to the grass on their property every weekend, which uses up 800 million gallons of petrol a year.
In addition, mowers can cause noise pollution, fertilisers can enter local watercourses and damage the ecology there, while pesticides can enter the home on people’s feet and the paws of pets.
Mr Pearson went on to say that, in his opinion, lawns do not often look good when they are overused or if they are in a shady garden.
As an alternative to grass, he suggested areas of gravel or groundcover, while a terrace can also provide some space to gather outside.
Ronseal recently recommended keeping gardens tidy by replacing lawns with decking, or installing a shed.
