Green home improvements ‘needed to meet CO2 targets’

8th March 2010

The UK’s current housing stock needs to be retrofitted in order to meet increasingly important CO2 targets, according to an expert at Whatgreenhome.com.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, made the comments after the government announced a series of initiatives to make Britain’s homes greener.

The new plans include pay-as-you-save green loans to be tied to the property – which will negate the up-front cost of eco upgrades and eco show homes in the hope of meeting targets to cut CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

"Clearly retrofitting and bringing the existing homes up to speed is absolutely critical if we are going to meet our own emissions targets and reduce CO2 emissions," Mr Miller commented.

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, a green transformation of Britain’s homes will take place over the next decade, including measures such as the insulation of six million homes by 2011 and by 2015, to have all practical lofts and walls insulated as well.
