There is now an additional incentive to lower bills for making business premises more energy efficient, after the government pledged to reward individuals and organisations that successfully lower their carbon emissions.
The revenue raised through the sale of emissions allowances will then be passed on to the participants in the form of a financial reward depending on their own performance.
It is hoped the scheme will reduce CO2 levels by 34 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020.
Commenting on the news, a spokesperson from the Renewable Energy Centre said: "This is one of the most positive initiatives which the government has implemented and one which will encourage businesses to invest because of the potential financial rewards."
Recent research by Pilkington energiKare revealed that people considered energy efficiency a major deciding factor when purchasing a property, with loft insulation, new boilers and energy efficient heating systems the fittings most homeowners were concerned about.
